Edmonton, AB: As the province of Alberta continues to demonstrate a commitment to child safety and well-being, the Society for Safe and Caring Schools & Communities is pleased to announce that Minister of Human Services Heather Klimchuk has accepted the role of our Honourary Chair.
Safe and Caring’s Board of Directors includes representation from the University of Alberta, the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Alberta School Boards Association, the College of Alberta School Superintendents and other organizations and individuals committed to working together to build safe, caring, inclusive and healthy environments for children and youth.
This important announcement occurs just in time for the Society’s Annual Creating Safe Spaces Waffle Breakfast, to be held during National Bullying Awareness Week on Wednesday, November 19 from 7:30 to 9:00 AM. As her first act as Honourary Chair, the Honourable Heather Klimchuk will attend the breakfast to announce Greetings from the Province and present the HEROES of a Safe and Caring World Award.
Executive Director of the Society for Safe and Caring Schools & Communities, Susan Hopkins, Ed.D. states: “As champions for child and youth well-being, we have an opportunity, grounded in a foundation of new policy and legislation and informed by evidence, to work together to create a true culture of caring in our schools and communities.”

About Heather Klimchuk
The Honourable Heather Klimchuk is a Canadian politician and current Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta representing the constituency of Edmonton-Glenora as a Progressive Conservative. She is currently Minister of Human Services. She is also a member of the Government’s committee on Agenda and Priorities. Previously, Ms. Klimchuk served as Minister of Culture, Minister of Culture and Community Services and as Minister of Service Alberta. Ms. Klimchuk’s public service experience prior to serving as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta includes working for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta as a researcher and working as a writer for both Premier Lougheed and Premier Getty. Ms. Klimchuk also assisted with the initiation of the Alberta Seniors Information Phone Line. She is an active member and leader in her community. Ms. Klimchuck holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta in political science.
